Step 1: Find & Identify Your Dream
You’ll need a focal point to direct your thoughts & actions in a forward direction. Countless scripture verses reference how God has a plan for each one of us, they state that he made each one of us for a specific purpose & that he even designated a time & place for us to carry this purpose out.
- What have you been thinking about for a long time?
- Is there a health goal, a ministry, a business or something that you want to pursue?
- Are you gifted in a particular area? Do you have a passion for a cause?
- You’ll need to clearly define what you’re looking to accomplish. (*See Jeremiah 29:11, Ephesians 2:10, and Acts 17:26-28)
Step 2: Make a Plan
Keep the game plan simple. Once you have a plan in place, stick to it at all cost!! The successes of most endeavors in life are often not complicated. Start by asking yourself these questions:
- What skills do I need to get to the next step?
- What resources do I need to accomplish my goal?
- What’s limiting me from the next step?
Pray about each step. Ask God to establish his will, not your will for the project and/or each step along the way. Ask him to remove any wrong motivations or intentions that you may not even be conscience of. It has been said, make your plans in pencil & give God the eraser.
Step 3: Put in the work by applying the 1-3 Rule
Once your plan is together, it’s time to work! Most successful endeavors come down to you doing 1-3 basic things consistently. There are almost no exceptions to that rule. Using fitness as an example, the majority of the results you will obtain is from your core activity. If you are a runner, it’s running. If you are a weight lifter, it’s lifting. Additional training has value, but may not get you to the specific goal that you’re focusing on. If you are in real estate, it’s listing & selling houses. Filling out paperwork & organizing your desk has a place of importance but don’t put it above what actually moves the project forward.
The reality is, most of us are working with some type of time constraints; we don’t have just one thing going on in our lives; we have multiple other commitments. That’s why it’s important to keep the main thing, the main thing!
Step 4: Leave Room for Rest
This has to be built in first. Yes, I said first. Especially if you have a family. All the success in the world means nothing if you have sacrificed the most important things to get there. Be where you’re at! If it’s family time, be with your family, you’re not on Facebook or dealing with work matters.
An easy way to remember this is what we at ArcorFit call Vertical Alignment. It’s simply aligning your priorities in life in the right order: God-Family-Work-Recreation.
